Justin Berkobien

Justin Berkobien

I am delighted to announce the arrival of our new Director of Youth Ministry, Justin Berkobien.  As a member of the Christian Education Committee for several years, I’ve come to appreciate the dynamic relationship between the youth and their youth leaders.  When we began our search for a new DYM, we determined that our youth should be included in the process.  Our search committee consisted of Bob Worley, Corinne Thomas, Chris Ramirez, Wendell Webster, and me, as the Chair.  In addition to having two youth representatives participating in the interviews, we asked the finalists, as part of the selection process,  to present a lesson to our students at a Wednesday night Youth meeting.  With guidance from Rev. Lincoln, we observed Justin’s ability to connect with our students while teaching and sharing his testimony.  Rev. Lincoln also met with Justin one-on-one.

Justin received his Bachelor of Arts, in Theater, from Saginaw Valley State University in Michigan and continued professionally in theater, television, commercial and film productions. After living in the Chicago area for a few years, he arrived in Los Angeles, and moved into the South Pasadena earlier this year, after finishing a national tour with Mamma Mia.  Previously, he was the Director of Youth Ministry at Ascension Lutheran Church, working with the Senior Pastor and Education Chair for two years.  At the same time, he also worked at Holy Cross Children’s services for five years, providing guidance and advocating for support to troubled youth and supervised an Independent Living Program for youth.

With Justin’s passion for inspiring young people, and his extraordinary talents in music and drama, we are excited that he feels the calling to Youth Ministry.  Justin’s first day will be Wednesday, August 14th.  In the true Oneonta way, let’s give Justin and his family a big welcome to Oneonta!

-Julie Angelo
